The short answer
A cold-water open-water practice should be supervised, short, easy to exit, and designed around one skill. Check the venue, weather, water quality, wind, tide or current, and safety cover. Enter gradually, wait for breathing to settle, stay close to the exit, and end before cold impairs coordination or judgment.
Do not practise alone, jump into cold water to "get it over with," or use time endured as the success metric. Cold water is a safety constraint, not a character test.
Choose the venue before the workout
Use an organized open-water venue or lifeguarded location with local rules and safety cover. The RNLI advises assessing conditions, entering gradually, swimming with a buddy or group, using visible equipment, and knowing how to get help.1
Before leaving home, record:
- official permission to swim;
- water and air temperature if available;
- weather, visibility, wind, tide, current, and forecast change;
- water-quality advisory;
- entry and at least one safe exit;
- safety-cover hours and emergency procedure;
- the person who knows your plan and return time.
If the site is closed, unsupervised, rough, polluted, or lacks a reliable exit, change the session. Fitness does not make those hazards disappear.
Use a five-session progression
Progress only when the previous session ended with controlled breathing, stable coordination, and normal recovery.

Distance is deliberately absent. Water temperature, body size, experience, wetsuit, wind, air temperature, effort, and individual response all change cooling. A time that was manageable last week is not a reusable prescription.
Session 1: entry and breathing
- Meet the buddy or safety team and point out the exit.
- Put on the bright cap and any venue-required visibility or flotation equipment.
- Walk in slowly; do not jump or dive.
- Keep the face out until the initial breathing response is controlled.
- Wet the face and neck gradually.
- Float or move easily in standing depth.
- Exit while movement and judgment are normal.
The RNLI's beginner guidance explicitly recommends gradual entry and waiting for breathing control.1 That is a safety action, not a performance drill.
Session 2: parallel-to-shore swimming
Swim a short line parallel to the bank or shore, not directly away from it. Keep the exit visible. Practise relaxed exhalation and a stroke that can be stopped immediately.
If breathing cannot settle, roll onto the back, signal for help, and follow the venue procedure. The RNLI's "Float to Live" guidance prioritizes floating and breathing control after unexpected cold-water entry.2
Session 3: sighting without panic
Use a clear landmark and lift the eyes briefly every few strokes. Do not chase a perfect line through chop. If conditions change, return to the nearest approved exit.

Session 4: test the wetsuit as equipment
Check:
- neck and shoulder comfort;
- full zipper closure;
- unrestricted breathing;
- goggle seal and cap visibility;
- chafing points;
- whether the suit changes body position;
- how it feels to remove with cold hands.
Wetsuits can reduce heat loss and change swimming mechanics, but they do not remove cold risk. A 2025 cohort of wetsuited open-water swims still observed large individual and environmental variation in deep-body temperature patterns.3 A laboratory study at 18°C found performance and physiological differences between swimsuit and wetsuit conditions, but its competitive swimmers and controlled flume do not define a safe duration for you.4
Session 5: rehearse one event question
Choose one:
- start calmly after a gradual supervised entry;
- sight around two buoys;
- draft without touching feet;
- exit, stand, and move to transition;
- take off goggles and cap without losing balance.
Do not add longer exposure, higher effort, and new equipment together. One session should answer one question.
Why the safety boundary is strict
Open-water swimming presents medical and environmental problems that pool training does not, including cold stress, water quality, currents, visibility, and limited access to help.5 A 2026 review found hypothermic responses in some published open-water observations even within competition-relevant temperature ranges, while highlighting major gaps in the evidence.6
Swimming-induced pulmonary edema can cause sudden breathing difficulty, cough, or chest symptoms. A systematic review found uncertainty around frequency and risk factors and reported recurrence in some affected swimmers.7 This is not something to self-diagnose at the water's edge.
Stop rules
Exit and get help for:
- breathing that does not settle;
- confusion, unusual drowsiness, or loss of coordination;
- chest pain or tightness;
- sudden shortness of breath, cough, or frothy sputum;
- weakness that makes the exit uncertain;
- severe shivering or inability to use hands normally;
- a buddy or safety-team instruction to stop.
Do not re-enter to prove that the first attempt "didn't count." Follow local emergency instructions. In the UK, the RNLI guidance distinguishes inland and coastal emergency services; elsewhere, confirm the local number before swimming.2
Plan the exit before the entry
Place warm, dry layers where they can be reached immediately. Know how the wetsuit will come off. Keep the post-swim plan simple and stay with the buddy while dressing.
Do not drive while confused, weak, or poorly coordinated. Continued cooling can occur after leaving the water, and subjective comfort does not perfectly measure core temperature.
Connect it to the training week
Cold-water practice is already a meaningful stressor. Do not automatically place it after a long ride, hard run, sleep-deprived night, or strength session that makes the exit harder.
