Open-Water Sighting for Triathlon: Pool-to-Water Practice

Build a repeatable sighting rhythm in the pool, then transfer it to supervised open water with course, conditions, and safety gates.

The short answer

Learn open-water sighting in two stages: first practise a small, controlled head lift without losing the stroke in a pool; then transfer that skill to supervised, permitted open water using a large fixed landmark and a short route near a safe exit. Sighting is navigation, not a reason to ignore breathing, conditions or safety support.

USA Triathlon recommends practising open-water skills such as sighting, continuous swimming and navigation before race day.1 IRONMAN’s Swim Smart guidance emphasizes preparation, course knowledge, conditions and the ability to stop or seek assistance.3 The event athlete guide and responsible local water authority remain final.

Separate four sighting jobs

“Look forward” hides several skills:

  1. lift the eyes only enough to find the landmark;
  2. return the head without dropping the hips excessively;
  3. breathe on a separate or combined stroke that remains comfortable;
  4. correct direction gradually rather than zigzagging.

Practise each job before adding crowding, turns, waves or fatigue.

Pool progression

Use a lane where the drill is allowed and does not endanger other swimmers.

Drill 1: one controlled look

During easy freestyle, lift the eyes briefly toward the end of the lane, identify one large object, then return the face to the water. Keep the movement small. Rest and repeat.

Drill 2: look then breathe

Sight forward, return the face toward the water and rotate to a normal side breath. Some athletes prefer a combined “crocodile eyes then breath” rhythm; others do better separating the actions. Choose the version that preserves control.

Drill 3: fixed intervals

Sight every six to ten strokes for several easy lengths. This is a test range, not a universal prescription. Record whether direction, breathing or body position changes.

Drill 4: variable intervals

Alternate more frequent sighting with a longer normal-swimming segment. This teaches you to respond to a landmark, turn or visual obstruction rather than obeying one rigid count.

USA Triathlon describes pool adaptations for open-water skills, but pool success does not prove readiness for weather, current, cold, poor visibility or group swimming.2

Use a simple accuracy test

Place one permitted, high-contrast target at the end of the lane. Ask a partner or coach to record:

  • whether you identify it correctly;
  • how many strokes pass before the next look;
  • whether your line changes;
  • whether pace or breathing becomes erratic;
  • whether the head lift grows as fatigue rises.

Do not chase a perfect-looking video. The pass condition is a small sighting action that keeps you calm, oriented and moving predictably.

Transfer to open water only through gates

Before entry, confirm:

  • the location permits swimming;
  • a qualified lifeguard, coach or appropriate support is present;
  • you are not swimming alone;
  • water quality, weather, traffic, current and temperature are acceptable;
  • the route stays close to a safe exit;
  • the group agrees signals and stop rules;
  • visibility equipment and a tow float are used where appropriate and permitted;
  • relevant health conditions have individual professional guidance.

RNLI guidance recommends lifeguarded locations where possible, gradual acclimatisation, suitable kit and strong visibility.4 A tow float can improve visibility but is not a guarantee of rescue, flotation suitability or safe conditions.

A four-session water progression

Session 1: stationary orientation

From shallow water or a safe supported position, identify the entry, exit, support and one large landmark. Practise pointing toward it and naming what would end the session.

Session 2: short parallel route

Swim a brief easy segment parallel to shore or another safe boundary. Sight the fixed landmark, stop well before fatigue and compare the actual line with the intended line.

Session 3: two-landmark route

Use one outbound landmark and one return landmark. Keep conditions familiar. Practise a gradual correction rather than a sharp mid-stroke turn.

Session 4: controlled course features

With qualified supervision, add one feature: a buoy turn, small consenting group, limited chop or longer continuous segment. Do not add cold, crowding, distance and poor visibility together.

Repeat a level if anxiety, navigation or breathing cannot settle. Calendar pressure does not make the next exposure safe.

Choose sighting frequency by context

Sight more often when:

  • the landmark is temporarily hidden;
  • wind, waves or current alter the line;
  • a turn approaches;
  • you are avoiding contact or traffic;
  • the course marking is uncertain.

Sight less often when:

  • the line is stable;
  • a reliable group or boundary provides orientation without unsafe drafting assumptions;
  • repeated head lifts disrupt breathing;
  • the next landmark is large and fixed.

No stroke count works for every swimmer and course. Test several frequencies under safe conditions, then use the one that balances accuracy and rhythm.

Build a reset protocol

Practise while calm:

  1. stop increasing effort;
  2. exhale deliberately;
  3. roll or move into a safe resting position;
  4. orient to support and the nearest safe exit;
  5. signal early;
  6. end the session if breathing, thinking or conditions do not normalize.

IRONMAN rules and Swim Smart material allow athletes to stop or rest under defined conditions; consult the current rules for what assistance is legal in the event.3 Resting in training is not a failed drill.

Cold, panic and medical boundaries

Cold-water responses vary widely, and research does not provide a universally safe acclimatisation schedule.6 A wetsuit, prior finish or high pool fitness does not remove cold shock, heart, breathing or incapacitation risk.

Do not progress through chest pain, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, confusion, cold incapacitation or a repeated inability to orient. A previous water emergency, relevant heart or lung condition, seizure disorder, pregnancy or medication concern needs individual guidance from an appropriate professional.

Race-week use

Recheck the current athlete guide for course direction, turn buoys, start format, water-temperature rules, wetsuit policy and emergency signals. Use an official practice swim when offered and appropriate, but do not use race week to create the entire skill.
