The short answer
Practise an IRONMAN 70.3 turn buoy as four separate jobs: identify the correct buoy, choose an approach line, turn without forcing contact, and sight the next landmark before rebuilding rhythm. Learn the movement in a pool, then transfer it to a permitted, supervised open-water site with a large practice marker and a clear exit.
Do not create a crowded simulation before you can navigate the turn calmly. The current event athlete guide, competition rules, water-safety team, and local authority remain final for course direction, assistance, equipment, and conditions.1
Turn one skill into four decisions

A buoy is not merely something to swim around. It is a navigation point where athletes converge, speed changes, and the next line may be hard to see.
Verify the event-specific facts
Copy these details from the current athlete guide:
- clockwise or anticlockwise course direction;
- turn-buoy colour and shape;
- whether smaller sighting buoys are part of the course;
- start format and expected congestion;
- official practice-swim details;
- wetsuit and water-temperature rules;
- assistance and withdrawal signals;
- location of the swim exit relative to the final turn.
Do not use a previous year's map as the final source. IRONMAN publishes current rules centrally, but the event guide carries local course details.1
Start in the pool
Use normal lane etiquette and only place equipment where the facility permits it.
Drill 1: landmark confirmation
Choose two fixed objects beyond the lane end. On easy freestyle, sight the first object, swim several normal strokes, then sight the second. The goal is to identify a target without turning every look into a large head lift.
Drill 2: compact direction change
At a permitted marker, practise a smooth 90-degree direction change. Keep the movement controlled and leave enough space for other swimmers. Try a wider arc first; a tight rotation is not automatically faster if it stops breathing or causes contact.
Drill 3: turn then sight
Complete the direction change, take two or three controlled strokes, then sight the exit landmark. Repeat until the exit look happens before effort rises.
Drill 4: both directions
Practise clockwise and anticlockwise turns. Even when the known course uses one direction, the other version exposes whether a breathing-side preference is hiding a navigation weakness.
Pool competence does not prove readiness for cold, waves, poor visibility, traffic, or a group in open water.
Transfer through safety gates
Enter open water only when:
- swimming is permitted at the location;
- an appropriate lifeguard, coach, or water-safety arrangement is present;
- you are not swimming alone;
- weather, current, water quality, temperature, and visibility are acceptable;
- the marker does not put swimmers into boat or public traffic;
- the route remains close to a safe exit;
- the group has agreed signals and stop rules;
- visibility equipment or a tow float is used where appropriate and permitted.
RNLI and British Triathlon guidance emphasizes suitable locations, visibility, acclimatisation, support, and a plan for getting out.3 A tow float can improve visibility, but it does not make unsafe conditions safe or guarantee rescue.
A five-session buoy progression
Session 1: solo line, supervised water
Use one large marker in familiar conditions. Swim a short approach, make a wide turn, sight the exit, and return to the safe boundary. Stop while breathing and temperature remain controlled.
Session 2: compare two approach lines
Repeat one slightly wider entry and one closer entry with no crowding. Record which line preserved breathing and required fewer corrective strokes. Do not touch, move, or hang on a marker unless the venue permits it.
Session 3: variable sighting
Start from different angles so the buoy is not always directly ahead. Practise confirming the marker early, then using one final look before the turn.
Session 4: one consenting partner
With qualified supervision, add one predictable partner on a parallel approach. Agree who holds which line and prohibit deliberate contact. The purpose is awareness, not a wrestling rehearsal.
Session 5: small controlled group
Only when earlier sessions are calm, add a small consenting group and one course feature. Keep the exit close and conditions familiar. Do not combine crowding, cold, waves, distance, and fatigue in the same progression step.
Repeat a level when breathing, orientation, or judgment does not settle. A calendar date is not a safety gate.
Choose the approach line
Wider and calmer
Use a wider line when the inside is congested, you need clear water, or contact disrupts breathing. It may add distance but can reduce stopping and correction.
Closer but clear
Use a closer line only when space is genuinely available and you can hold direction without crossing another swimmer's path.
Reset rather than force
If the gap closes, reduce effort, protect the head, create space, and reorient. Do not push, pull, climb over, or deliberately impede another athlete. The current rules govern conduct and penalties.1
The best line is the one that gets you onto the next leg oriented and in control, not necessarily the shortest line on a map.
Build a turn reset
Rehearse this sequence while calm:
- stop increasing effort;
- exhale deliberately;
- create safe space;
- identify the correct buoy or support craft;
- roll, tread, or use another safe resting action as appropriate;
- signal early if breathing or orientation does not normalize;
- exit through the official safety process when needed.
