Audit the bike before practising repairs
A rehearsal cannot compensate for poor maintenance. Before race-specific sessions:
- use a qualified mechanic for work beyond your competence;
- confirm brakes, steering, wheels, tyres, drivetrain, fasteners, and fit are safe;
- inspect the exact storage system used for tools, fluid, and nutrition;
- remove loose items that can fall or obstruct control;
- check that any repair kit fits the wheel, tyre, valve, and inflation system actually used;
- verify batteries and electronic components according to their manufacturer guidance.
The purpose is not to become a bicycle technician in one session. It is to prevent avoidable mismatches and make a safe decision under time pressure.
Use a four-rehearsal progression
Rehearsal 1: identify every item
Lay out the permitted equipment. Name the job of each item and the problem it cannot solve. Remove duplicates with no defined purpose. Confirm that every consumable is in date and that inflators or tools are stored safely.
Rehearsal 2: stationary sequence
With the bike stable and no traffic present, practise the sequence for one familiar repair you are already competent to perform. Use the manufacturer's instructions and qualified coaching where needed. Record the steps, tools, common errors, and the point at which the repair should be abandoned.
Rehearsal 3: roadside safety decision
At a controlled training venue, rehearse:
- noticing the problem without a sudden line change;
- signalling and moving fully out of the riding line where safe;
- stopping before inspecting equipment;
- keeping the bike and tools clear of other riders;
- deciding repair, official support, or withdrawal;
- checking control before rejoining.
Do not simulate a failure in live traffic. The safety sequence matters more than the stopwatch.
Rehearsal 4: post-repair restart
After a successful familiar repair, use a short, low-risk check before normal riding. Confirm braking, steering, wheel security, tyre condition, and that tools are secured. If anything remains uncertain, do not continue riding.
Classify the problem before acting

Practise equipment compatibility
Many race-day failures are not missing effort; they are mismatched equipment:
- tube or plug system does not match the tyre setup;
- valve extender or inflator does not fit;
- tool cannot reach the required fastener;
- storage ejects items over rough surface;
- sealant, battery, or cartridge was never checked;
- race wheel differs from the training wheel;
- repair changes wheel alignment or braking.
Test compatibility in a safe environment well before race week. Follow manufacturer instructions because components and systems vary.
Set a repair boundary
Write three columns:
I can safely do
List only repairs practised successfully on the exact setup.
I need official or qualified help for
Include unfamiliar drivetrain, brake, wheel, steering, electronic, or structural problems.
I will stop for
Include unsafe control, crash symptoms, severe damage, repeated failure, inability to clear the course safely, or an event-official instruction.
This boundary reduces the chance that adrenaline turns an uncertain problem into a dangerous experiment.
Rehearse the race-day communication
The event guide should identify emergency contacts, course support, and withdrawal instructions. Know how to:
- tell an official where you are;
- describe the problem without diagnosing beyond your knowledge;
- keep yourself and the bike clear of the course;
- follow instructions from referees, marshals, mechanics, and medical staff;
- return timing equipment or report withdrawal when required.
Do not rely on a phone having coverage, battery, or permitted use. Follow the current event procedure.
Race-week bike checklist
- The bike has completed its final qualified safety check.
- No new component or storage system was added late.
- The kit matches the exact race setup.
- Each carried item has a permitted job.
- One familiar repair sequence has been rehearsed.
- The stop/repair/support/withdraw boundary is written.
- Event-specific assistance and withdrawal rules were rechecked.
- Tools and bottles cannot fall into the course.
- A post-repair control check is defined.
Do not turn the final ride into a stress test. Taper evidence supports reducing fatigue rather than chasing late fitness.2
