Do not accept an item or action because it seems sporting. Confirm that it is permitted. Rules change, and event-specific instructions can add context.
Build an exact repair card
List the actual system:
- tubed, tubeless, or tubular tyre;
- tyre and rim model;
- axle or quick-release system;
- spare tube, plug, boot, or sealant as appropriate;
- tyre levers compatible with the rim;
- inflation device and compatible valve;
- valve extender if used;
- small tool needed for the axle or storage;
- safe storage location on the bike.
If you cannot name the system, ask a qualified bicycle mechanic to teach the correct method. A tubeless plug, inner-tube replacement, and tubular intervention are different tasks.
Use a stop-before-repair sequence
1. Control the bike

Place the bike where it will not roll, fall into traffic, or obstruct the course. Keep yourself on the safer side away from moving riders and vehicles.
4. Identify the failure
Check whether the problem is a puncture, damaged tyre, loose valve, wheel damage, brake rub, or another mechanical issue. Do not inflate a visibly unsafe system and hope.
5. Repair with the rehearsed method
Use the manufacturer- and mechanic-approved sequence for the exact setup. Protect small parts and keep tools out of the course.
6. Verify before rejoining
Spin and inspect the wheel, confirm the axle and brake system, squeeze or gauge pressure as trained, and check that the tyre is seated. Walk the bike if uncertainty remains.
Practise in a controlled environment
Start at home or in a workshop, not beside traffic:

Have a qualified mechanic inspect the race setup after significant changes. Do not intentionally puncture a usable tyre on an open road to make practice realistic.
Make inflation a safety step
Compressed-gas cartridges and pumps have equipment-specific instructions and hazards. Practise:
- attaching the inflator without emptying it prematurely;
- protecting skin from cold components where applicable;
- controlling the inflation rate;
- estimating or checking a safe pressure;
- confirming the tyre remains seated;
- storing or disposing of used equipment under event rules.
More pressure is not automatically safer or faster. Tyre, rim, rider, surface, weather, and manufacturer limits matter. Seek a mechanic's guidance for the correct range.
Add a tyre-damage decision
Do not treat every flat as a simple puncture. Stop the race plan and seek qualified support when you find:
- sidewall cut or exposed casing;
- damaged rim or spoke;
- tyre that will not seat;
- repeated rapid pressure loss;
- damaged valve;
- brake or axle uncertainty;
- crash damage;
- a repair that changes steering or wheel rotation.
A tyre boot may be an emergency measure for some tubed setups, but only when taught for the exact system. It is not a universal permission to ride a damaged tyre.
Protect the run after time loss
Write a response before race day:
- accept the time already lost;
- finish the verification;
- rejoin without blocking or surging;
- return to the planned effort cap;
- resume fueling and hydration only when control is stable;
- reassess the finish goal at a later planned checkpoint.
Do not try to recover several minutes in the first kilometres after the repair. A hard surge can increase risk and undermine the run.
Run a two-scenario rehearsal
Scenario A: early puncture
Practise the repair, then ride easily for several minutes before returning to the session. Ask whether frustration caused rushed re-entry or overpacing.
Scenario B: late puncture
Practise after a normal endurance ride in a controlled location, then complete only a short, easy transition run if the bike and body are safe. The goal is decision quality under mild fatigue, not a maximal brick.
Concurrent endurance training can carry fatigue across disciplines.3 One repair rehearsal should not become an excuse for a destructive race simulation.
