Behind the Rocks marathon terrain and early arrival
The shared start with the 50K does not mean both races follow the same route. Download the marathon map and identify any distance split before race morning. Use the marathon’s own aid and cutoff chart when judging readiness; the longer race’s schedule is not a substitute.
Sand, slickrock and dirt roads put different demands on footing. Practise on comparable terrain with the pack and footwear you expect to use, and let pace vary with surface and gradient. Carry familiar food between stations and a reusable cup or bottles, because the organizer does not supply disposable cups at the aid points.
The race is outside central Moab and the last approach uses a dirt road that can be difficult to identify. Save the official directions and allow extra time to find the venue in the early morning. Parking attendants control the site, and the organizer lists a period during which vehicles cannot leave while shorter races start. Supporters should check that restriction before arranging another appointment.
Collection is available the previous afternoon and on race morning, with photo identification required for your own bib. Plan to finish collection before the marathon briefing rather than using the later closing time intended for other distances. The timing chip must be attached to the shoe as instructed. Before departure, check the final race guide for any course or access update and arrange a clear finish-area meeting point away from active runners.
