Veternica: 42 km with mountain climbing
The Pelister organizer lists the Veternica marathon profile as 42 km with 2,454 metres of ascent in the Baba Mountain and Pelister National Park area near Bitola. The event's June 12, 2027 announcement sits alongside course material from the previous edition, so use the published profile to understand the challenge and confirm the final route when the new guide is issued.
The half marathon and shorter trail race have different distance and climbing figures. Make sure that the GPX file, aid chart and mandatory equipment instructions all belong to Veternica, rather than assuming the shorter course is simply the first half of your route. Save an offline map that shows the whole marathon and the location of support points.
Preparation needs time moving uphill and descending on mountain terrain, not just enough road kilometres to total a marathon. Practise deliberate hiking on steeper sections and returning to an easy run afterwards. On descents, work on controlled footing and sustainable rhythm instead of treating every downhill as a chance to regain time lost climbing.
Build a schedule between aid points using the elevation profile as well as distance. A short steep section may take longer than a much longer runnable one. Rehearse carrying the required kit and accessing food without unpacking everything, then recheck the final weather, route changes and organizer briefing before departure. Leave flexibility in your expected finish time; a road-marathon personal best is useful evidence of general running experience, but it is not a direct prediction for this mountain course.
