A net descent with an important late climb
The Mesa Falls organizer lists the July 17, 2027 full marathon at 05:30. Its profile starts at 6,135 feet and finishes at 5,253 feet, a net descent of 882 feet. However, the course climbs roughly 300 feet between miles 17.1 and 19.9. The net number therefore hides a section that can materially change a late-race pacing plan.
Avoid treating the early descending miles as free time to bank. Practise controlled downhill running with a comfortable stride, introducing that work gradually within training you can recover from. Then rehearse returning to steady effort on an uphill section after you have already been running for a while. The aim is to preserve comfortable movement for the climb, not to force your flat-road pace through it.
Mark the start and end of the late climb on your race notes. Allow pace to respond to the gradient while keeping effort measured, and place fueling reminders where you can manage them comfortably. A pace chart based only on the net descent will understate how uneven the work can feel.
The early start also needs a practical rehearsal: waking, eating, using the toilet and reaching the marathon start. Confirm the current transport or shuttle instructions rather than assuming the half marathon's later start uses the same journey. Plan where dry clothes and supporters will be at the finish, and check onward travel against a realistic finish and collection time rather than the most optimistic downhill prediction.
