MIUT Marathon is a 40 km mountain race in 2027
The race name does not mean this is a certified 42.195 km road marathon. The dedicated course page still mixes 40 km statistics with older 42 km prose; the dated 2027 regulations provide the clearer current specification. Prepare for the actual mountain distance and elevation. A road-marathon split calculator cannot account for the time spent climbing, descending and moving over uneven ground.
The course description climbs from Monte toward Chão da Lagoa, then continues toward Portela, Funduras, Larano and Boca do Risco before the approach to Machico. The full island-crossing race starts elsewhere. Do not book a start transfer to Porto Moniz merely because it appears prominently in the wider MIUT programme.
The 2027 marathon schedule lists a 09:00 meeting in Machico, a 09:30 bus from there, and a 09:50 Funchal bus. Check your selected transfer and its final meeting point. Keep collection, equipment checks and travel to the bus separate in your itinerary; reaching Monte independently is not the same as completing the event’s check-in requirements.
Personal assistance is not permitted for the Marathon category. Read its own mandatory-kit column, carry the required equipment and allow time to use official support. The 2027 rules distinguish intermediate departure cutoffs from the overall limit. Build a conservative section plan that includes stops, then check the final map and any organizer amendments before departure.
