Two waterfront laps, with a checkpoint before the second
The Wellington course guide uses the Hnry Stadium and Fran Wilde Walkway area for the start and finish. The full marathon completes two out-and-back laps through the waterfront route, while the half completes one. The current guide describes a first-lap checkpoint at 22.2 km by 11:00 and the end of road controls at 13:00; recheck these operational details in the final July 4, 2027 instructions.
The first lap is not simply a reason to run at half-marathon effort. Keep a margin for the second out-and-back and include aid stops when checking whether your projected arrival meets the intermediate checkpoint. A finish target that appears to fit the overall window can still fail an earlier checkpoint if the opening section takes longer than expected.
The guide says aid supplies water and isotonic drink in cups, with no gels. Carry the familiar food required by your plan rather than expecting your usual gel to appear at a table. Rehearse drinking from a cup and carrying fuel during a long run so that both are routine when you pass the waterfront stations.
Pay attention to the kilometre signs: the route information distinguishes distance travelled on the outward leg from distance remaining on the return. Read the signs in the context of your lap and distance, rather than resetting your pacing plan after an apparently surprising number. Supporters should specify which pass they expect to see, and runners should learn the continuation for lap two before following half-marathon finishers towards the stadium.
