Exmoor is a coastal trail marathon with substantial climbing
The Endurancelife Exmoor page lists the marathon as approximately 26.5 miles with 6,070 feet of ascent, starting from the Martinhoe area on May 8, 2027. Its terrain includes grass, rock and forest, with coastal cliffs, wooded valleys and moorland. Those figures describe a trail challenge; a flat-road 42.195 km prediction is not a sensible standalone finish estimate.
Build preparation around time moving on comparable terrain. Practise walking steeper climbs purposefully and descending under control, then returning to an easy running rhythm. A road long run can support endurance, but it does not rehearse choosing a line on uneven ground or carrying the equipment needed for a coastal trail race.
Read the event manual for the required kit and check that your carrying system can hold it comfortably. Test access to food and drink while wearing the pack, including on a climb when you may be moving more slowly. Grip decisions should reflect the actual surface and forecast; the word “trail” alone does not identify the right shoe for every section.
The organizer describes an online check-in process and safety video before the event. Complete those steps when the current instructions arrive rather than leaving them for the drive to Martinhoe. Save the marathon-specific route and support information offline, and distinguish them from the shorter and longer distances at the same event. Your aid and finish-time plan should include the climbing and any necessary stops, not just a target pace multiplied by the nominal distance.
