Great Wall steps, checkpoints and Beijing transfers
The course includes steps of irregular height and unpaved connections between wall sections. Practise controlled climbing, descending and hiking on similar terrain without turning every training session into a maximum effort. A flat-road finishing time is not a reliable estimate for this route. Allow space around other runners and prioritize secure footing over maintaining a fixed kilometre pace.
The full-marathon map uses named towers, a red loop and checkpoint visits where your bib must be marked. Study the entire sequence rather than following a half-marathon runner or assuming the first return to the main square means the finish. Download the current map and take the organizer’s briefing seriously; routing can change around restricted sections.
The organizer describes course-information meetings and kit collection at Pan Pacific Beijing on May 6–7, from 10:00 to 17:00. Confirm the final appointment and early race-morning bus departure. Include the long return journey in your food, clothing and post-race plan, rather than arranging a tight onward connection immediately after your predicted finish.
The course-information page describes gaps between water points that can reach 10 km and asks runners to carry supplies. Plan by expected time on that terrain, not distance alone, and verify the final requirements. Rehearse a practical carrying system and use official support if unwell. The existence of aid stations does not make this a standard urban marathon with frequent roadside access.
