Swim, bike and run preparation
The current event overview classifies the swim as ocean, the bike as flat and the run as rolling. Practise a sustainable bike effort for prolonged flat sections, including handling and fueling in the position you intend to race. The run also has elevation changes: pace by effort and protect your ability to run the later hills. These classifications do not confirm the final map, water conditions, wetsuit decision or aid layout. Use this event’s athlete guide for those details.
Confirmed next-edition date
Sandstone IRONMAN 70.3 Santa Cruz is scheduled for Sunday, September 12, 2027. The official race header currently says registration is opening soon. The September 13, 2026 date previously shown here has elapsed. Check the organizer's notification and entry information before committing to travel.
Checked October 11, 2026 against the official organizer page.
The quick profile calls the bike flat and the run rolling. The narrative describes a rolling Highway 1 bike ride and a flat half marathon. That disagreement does not establish the final 2027 route. Check the current course maps and athlete guide before setting elevation targets or a fixed pace. Prepare for changes in effort and conditions instead of treating a short label as a complete course description.
Plan backward from the verified date
These dates are calendar calculations, not prescribed workloads. Use the training start-date calculator to compare another runway, then choose from recent training, recovery and available days.
Build backward from race day
Progress one important variable at a time. Duration, intensity, technical difficulty, open-water exposure and brick length all create stress; changing several together makes it hard to learn what helped and what exceeded recovery. Every three or four weeks, review whether easy work is still easy, key technique remains stable and the following week remains usable.
Translate the official course into decisions
- the exact start and transition sequence;
- surface, elevation, turns, repeated laps and congestion points;
- aid access, equipment rules, cutoffs and prohibited assistance;
- expected temperature, wind, water conditions;
- transport, check-in, briefing and collection deadlines;
- the conditions that will make you slow down, stop or seek help.
Train the decisions, not a fantasy of perfect conditions. Use effort and technique when pace is distorted by hills, wind, heat, crowding. Do not copy an elevation number, start time or cutoff from another edition.
Final official-source checklist
Within race week, reopen the official event page and confirm date, venue, start procedure, entry status, course, rules, equipment, cutoffs and emergency guidance. Keep the current athlete guide available offline if the organiser provides one.
This is general training and race-planning information, not medical advice. The NHS running-injury guidance advises against running through pain. Seek a qualified clinician's assessment for persistent pain or symptoms that change how you move.
