During half-marathon race-week travel, protect the race and sleep opportunity before protecting every planned session. Keep one short familiar run or primer when it helps routine, move or cut strength and optional volume, build delay buffer into the journey, and decide food, transport, bib pickup, and race-morning timing before departure.
Travel fatigue can occur without crossing time zones; jet lag also involves a circadian shift. A short flight with a long airport transfer can cost more routine than the flight time suggests. A long journey without time-zone change can still mean sitting, early waking, unfamiliar meals, and delayed sleep.
Protect three race-week jobs
1. Reduce fatigue
Taper evidence supports reducing training volume while retaining familiar frequency and some intensity.3 It does not require completing every planned kilometre. When travel crowds the week, remove optional easy volume and high-soreness strength before moving an essential session into poor sleep.
2. Preserve familiarity
A short easy run, a few controlled strides, or a brief movement routine can preserve rhythm. The session should finish with more confidence than it started. It does not create new fitness.
3. Remove race-morning decisions
Confirm the route to the start, transport schedule, bag rules, breakfast access, weather layer, bib, timing chip, and arrival window. Logistics work is part of taper because unresolved decisions can consume sleep and attention.

Do not repay a missed session after arrival. A compressed taper can place faster work, strength, and travel fatigue too close together.
A worked four-day example
Assume travel on Thursday for a Sunday race:
Thursday: journey
Use walking during safe travel breaks, normal meals, and steady drinking to thirst. No catch-up run after a late arrival.
Friday: restore routine
If sleep, movement, and symptoms are normal, complete 20–30 minutes easy. If not, walk, settle logistics, and reassess.
Saturday: optional primer
Choose rest or a short familiar shakeout with a few controlled strides. Stop if effort is unusually high or pain changes movement.
Sunday: race
Use the verified transport, breakfast, warm-up, and start plan. Do not use race morning to compensate for a quiet Thursday or Friday.
This is an example, not a prescription. Current health, baseline training, journey, climate, and race format can change the decision.
Handle sleep without catastrophizing
Athlete sleep recommendations emphasize individualized need and sufficient opportunity.5 One imperfect night does not prove the race is lost. Protect the controllable pattern:
- prepare equipment before the final evening;
- use a familiar wind-down routine;
- keep the room dark, quiet, and comfortable where possible;
- avoid repeatedly checking the clock;
- do not introduce an untested sleep aid;
- move an optional morning activity rather than borrowing more sleep.
Sleep-intervention research is context-dependent and does not justify a universal protocol.6 Seek qualified guidance for persistent sleep problems or medication questions.
Build the food and fluid plan around access
Identify what will actually be available during the journey and at the destination. Pack familiar, permitted foods where appropriate. Confirm breakfast opening times and room storage before arrival.
Do not use travel as a reason to force water. Exercise-associated hyponatremia guidance warns that excessive fluid intake can be dangerous.7 Use thirst, normal meals, conditions, the practised race plan, and medical advice where relevant.
Adjust for a different climate
Check official weather and local alerts. A warmer, colder, more humid, or higher-altitude destination can change effort and clothing. Heat-acclimation evidence supports structured preparation over time; a last-minute hot session is not acclimation.8
Use effort and symptoms rather than forcing a home-training pace. Severe heat, cold, air-quality, or weather instructions override the plan.

When to change the race plan
Reduce, defer, or seek qualified help when travel coincides with:
- fever or worsening illness;
- chest pain, fainting, or severe breathing difficulty;
- pain that changes walking or running;
- repeated vomiting or inability to keep fluid down;
- severe sleepiness that makes driving unsafe;
- dangerous weather or transport disruption;
- inability to reach required event procedures.
A race entry does not turn an unsafe journey or symptom into training.

How early should I arrive?
There is no universal answer. Consider trip length, time zones, direction, prior response, work and family constraints, event logistics, and sleep opportunity.
Should I run immediately after flying?
Only if movement, alertness, conditions, and schedule are normal. A walk or rest may serve the taper better after a long or delayed journey.
What if I miss the final workout?
Do not make it up. Keep the race-week goal—low fatigue and familiar movement—and resume from the current day.
Should I use melatonin for jet lag?
Medication and supplement decisions need individualized medical or pharmacy guidance. Do not test a new product in race week.
Safety boundary
