The short answer
Build a half-marathon gel carry plan from products and timing already tested in training, then map each planned use to the event's current aid-station locations and rules. Carry enough to execute the rehearsed plan without assuming every station stocks your product. Practise opening, taking, and storing it while running before race week.
Nutrition evidence supports carbohydrate during endurance exercise in context, but it does not create one gel count for every runner.1 Finish time, pre-race intake, product dose, tolerance, intensity, conditions, and fluid access all matter.

The half-marathon fueling plan by finish time helps frame the broader nutrition rehearsal. This page has a narrower job: decide what you carry, where it sits, when you use it, and what happens when a station is missed.
Do not introduce a new gel, caffeine dose, concentrated drink, belt, shorts, or handheld bottle on race day. A compact plan is useful only when the product and carrying method are familiar.

The organizer owns the current station layout, products, litter rules, and assistance policy. Re-open the official athlete guide in race week. An old map, social post, or another event's setup is not enough.
Convert your rehearsal into a carry card
Write one row per planned use:

Count the carbohydrate printed on the actual package. “One gel” is not a consistent dose across products. If caffeine is present, record it separately and include caffeine from coffee, drinks, chews, or other products.
Choose a carry method by evidence
Test each option during a race-like run:
Shorts pocket
Pass only if the package stays secure, does not chafe, and can be reached without changing form. Practise returning the empty wrapper to the pocket when no litter zone is available.
Belt
Pass only if it stays stable at working pace and remains comfortable when full and partly empty. A belt that rotates or bounces in training will not become reliable because race day is important.
Handheld flask or soft bottle
Use only when the grip, weight, refill plan, and event rules are familiar. Check whether carrying fluid changes arm swing or creates hand tension.
On-course product
Use it only after verifying the exact product and rehearsing it. Carry your own backup when a missed table, dropped cup, delayed restock, or last-minute organizer change would otherwise break the plan.
Practise the full action
Opening a package while standing in a kitchen is not the race task. Rehearse:
- identify the planned marker;
- move safely to the appropriate side of the course;
- remove the product without dropping other items;
- open it without using an unsafe bite or tearing motion;
- take it gradually as rehearsed;
- pair it with the planned fluid;
- store the wrapper or use the marked litter zone;
- return to rhythm without a surge.
Do this at a controlled effort first. Then use one bounded race-pace rehearsal. Stop if swallowing, breathing, footing, or awareness becomes unsafe.
Separate time from distance
Distance-only plans can drift when pace changes. Time-only plans can miss the available water. Write both:
- time anchor: the rehearsed interval or point;
- course anchor: the nearest verified station or landmark;
- decision rule: what to do if the two no longer align.
For example: “Use the familiar gel near 45 minutes if breathing is controlled and take water at the verified 9K station. If the station moved or water is unavailable, delay rather than forcing a dry product that has not been tested.”
This is a worked example, not a universal prescription.
Build a missed-station rule
If a cup, product, or station is missed:
- do not reverse direction;
- do not cut across runners;
- do not take an unfamiliar replacement automatically;
- check the next verified water point;
- use the carried backup only as rehearsed;
- reduce intensity if heat, hydration access, or stomach response changes materially.
One missed item does not justify swallowing several products together. Concentration and dose size can worsen gastrointestinal symptoms for some athletes.3
Use a tolerance scorecard
After each rehearsal, record:

Progress only when the action and response are repeatable. Seek qualified sports-nutrition or medical help for persistent or severe symptoms rather than repeatedly testing larger doses.
Do not confuse hydration with a gel count
Fluid needs vary, and drinking beyond need can contribute to exercise-associated hyponatraemia.5 A gel does not automatically require a fixed amount of fluid unless the product instructions and rehearsal support it. Likewise, aid-station availability does not mean every cup must be consumed.
Use thirst, conditions, practiced access, product instructions, and professional guidance where appropriate. Never use body-weight change during one run as a diagnosis.
Race-week packing check
- Re-open the official event guide.
- Check package expiry and condition.
- Count planned items plus one justified backup.
- Mark caffeinated products.
- Put each item in its rehearsed carry position.
- Confirm wrapper and litter-zone behaviour.
- Pack the exact shorts, belt, or flask used in practice.
- Save the aid-station map offline.
- Write the missed-station rule.
- Keep the final rehearsal short and familiar.

How many gels do I need for a half marathon?
There is no universal count. Use finish time, the carbohydrate in the exact product, pre-race intake, tolerance, conditions, and a rehearsed plan.
Should I take a gel at every aid station?
