Direct answer
For a first 5K, make the goal a controlled completion rather than a promised time. You may walk, run or use planned walk-run intervals. Choose the mode that you can repeat in training and recover from normally.
Choose the starting mode
Walking intervals are not a failed version of running. They are a way to control the running dose. Use the complete walking versus running comparison if the choice is still unclear.
Define the event and the week
Pick a nearby event far enough away that the opening week resembles activity you can already do. Then protect two or three easy session windows. Increase one major stressor at a time—frequency, total duration or running duration—so you can see what changed recovery.
Use the finish-line selector, then compare the available runway with the 10-week 5K plan. A printed week is useful only when it fits your current readiness.
If weight management is part of the reason
Keep the capability goal in charge of the workout. Running can support physical activity, but it does not guarantee weight loss and should not become punishment for food or a scale result. Read running for weight loss with a performance goal before trying to force both outcomes at once.
Track easy minutes, sessions started, pain-free function, recovery and confidence at gradually longer distances. Stop for severe symptoms or pain that changes gait. Medical conditions, pregnancy, surgery or a long inactive period can change the appropriate start.
Your next seven days
- Choose the event and define a controlled finish.
- Put two easy sessions into real calendar windows.
- Select walking, walk-running or easy running from current evidence.
- Record total time, effort and next-day function.
- Repeat a tolerable pattern before progressing it.
