The short answer
Build a 100K trail mandatory-kit system from the current organizer checklist, then prove every item fits, stays dry, remains accessible, and works under likely conditions. The lightest compliant item is not automatically the safest choice. Recheck the rules and forecast during race week.
Mandatory equipment is event-specific. Eiger Ultra Trail by UTMB's 2026 regulations, for example, require runners to carry listed equipment for the full race and allow checks and penalties.1 Its list is not authority for another event. Use your organizer's live regulations, athlete guide, briefings, and official changes.
Create a source-controlled checklist
Add the document edition and verification date:

Do not paraphrase while purchasing. “Water-resistant” and “waterproof with hood” are different requirements. Record minimum ratings, sizes, quantities, and whether an item must be worn or merely carried.
The organizer may activate hot-weather, cold-weather, or severe-weather kits. Pack the conditional system early enough to test it. Race-week weather can change the official requirement.
Test function, not ownership
Owning a jacket does not prove it works in the pack.
Waterproof layer
Wear it over the planned base and pack. Check hood movement, zipper access, sleeve coverage, and whether sweat management is tolerable. A lab label cannot tell you whether the garment fits the complete race system.
Warm layers and gloves
Test them with wet or cold hands. Confirm the layer can be reached without emptying the whole pack. Mountain weather can create combined cold, wind, precipitation, and fatigue exposure.1
Lighting
Walk and run on a permitted, familiar route in darkness. Practise switching on, changing mode, and accessing backup power without placing loose batteries on the ground. Do not rely on one untested beam or a phone light.
Hydration capacity
Fill every required container, then run with the full volume. Check leaks, bounce, hose routing, and whether the official capacity is still carried when one flask is partly consumed.
Emergency items
Know how to use the whistle, survival blanket, phone, emergency number, and any organizer tracking system. Carrying an item without understanding it is incomplete preparation.
Pack by access priority
Use three zones:
- Immediate: food, water, phone, whistle, and the current next-section need.
- Weather: jacket, warm layer, gloves, and conditional equipment.
- Emergency reserve: protected items that remain untouched unless required.
Place the official checklist in a waterproof sleeve or offline phone note. Photograph the final layout. Keep essential medication, identification, and valuables under the organizer's instructions rather than burying them in a drop bag.
Waterproof inner bags can keep emergency items dry, but each added layer must remain operable with tired or gloved hands. Label identical pouches by function, not color alone.
Run a full-pack shakedown
Use a controlled session far enough from race day to change the system:
- Weigh and photograph the complete pack.
- Fill the required fluid capacity.
- Dress for the planned starting conditions.
- Run, hike, climb, and descend on safe relevant terrain.
- Access food, phone, jacket, gloves, and light in a fixed order.
- Simulate rain with a safe hose or controlled wet test if appropriate.
- Finish, inspect skin, shoulders, leaks, damaged packaging, and unused clutter.
- Change one problem, then retest.
Do not make the shakedown the longest or hardest session. Its job is equipment reliability. Trail-ultra fatigue is multifactorial and includes neuromuscular, metabolic, gastrointestinal, sleep, and cognitive demands.2 A pack that works while fresh still needs a simple late-race access sequence.
Use a failure-mode card

Never solve missing mandatory kit with unauthorized outside assistance. Do not continue into remote conditions merely to avoid a penalty or withdrawal.
Connect kit to aid and drop bags
Mandatory carry and drop-bag equipment have different jobs. If an item must remain with you for the full race, a future checkpoint bag does not satisfy the rule. Recheck whether replacements are allowed and whether the organizer-issued bag is guaranteed to arrive.

Race-week audit
- Re-open the latest official regulations and briefing.
- Confirm conditional weather-kit activation.
- Replace expired, damaged, wet, or depleted items.
- Charge and test electronics; carry them as required.
- Check forecast and official safety notices.
- Pack the full list, then use a second-person read-back.
- Photograph the final pack without treating the photo as proof after changes.
- Keep the pack intact after inspection.
Heat, cold, altitude, lightning, wildfire, and air quality require event-specific decisions. Consensus heat guidance supports preparation, pacing, cooling, and medical controls rather than one magic garment.4 Follow officials and withdraw when safety requires it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the lightest mandatory-kit option?
Only if it meets the exact rule and provides adequate protection for the course and conditions. The organizer's minimum is not a promise of comfort or safety.
Does a drop bag count as mandatory carry?
Not when the rules require the item to remain with you. Verify replacement and checkpoint rules in the current guide.
How often should I test the full pack?
At least early enough to fix fit, leaks, access, and durability, then again after material changes. Do not create unnecessary long-run load solely to test it.
What if the forecast changes?
Recheck official kit activation and safety notices. Add adequate protection within the rules, and do not start or continue when conditions exceed your safe preparation.
Safety boundary
Mandatory kit reduces some risks; it does not make extreme weather, remote terrain, illness, injury, or navigation safe. Follow event officials and emergency services.
