Benchmark the segment, then train the bottleneck
This study used 186,411 official race results through the 2023/24 season to build category-specific percentiles for HYROX workouts and running segments. That scale makes it useful for locating where a result sits within a comparable historical field.
Compare like with like—division, category and event era—then identify the one or two segments that consume disproportionate time without sacrificing the much larger running demand. A percentile is a diagnostic starting point, not a target that should override sound pacing or safe technique.
The database is descriptive: it cannot show why an athlete was faster or whether a particular workout caused improvement. Equipment, course flow and the participant population can also change over time. Check the study boundaries in the PubMed record.
