HYROX Doubles Work Sharing: Build a Repeatable Station Plan

A practical HYROX Doubles strategy for assigning station work, choosing switch points, rehearsing transitions, and protecting the shared run.

The short answer

Build a HYROX Doubles plan around the pair's repeatable work, not a 50/50 split and not each athlete's best isolated station. Both athletes complete the running together; at workout stations, the pair uses the current official “You Go, I Go” rules and only one athlete works at a time.1 The best allocation preserves movement quality, makes switch points obvious, and leaves both athletes able to run together.

Read the current division rulebook and event athlete guide before racing. This guide helps organize decisions; it does not replace official standards, judge instructions, or penalties.

First, understand the shared constraint

HYROX follows eight 1 km runs interspersed with eight workout stations.1 In Doubles, station work may be shared, but running is still a paired task. That changes the question from “Who is strongest at the sled?” to “What allocation produces the fastest repeatable pair across the whole event?”

An athlete who empties the tank on a preferred station can slow the next shared kilometre. An athlete protected from every weak station may be too fresh while the partner deteriorates. The plan needs to manage both local skill and accumulated fatigue.

Make a station evidence table

Use recent race-standard practice, not reputation:

Test each entry after running, because isolated gym numbers do not represent compromised station work. Concurrent strength-and-endurance research supports training both qualities, while also showing that programming and fatigue interactions matter.2

Choose switch points that are easy to execute

The simplest useful switch cues are visible:

  • a fixed distance on an erg display;
  • a course or lane marker;
  • a small fixed repetition count;
  • a fixed number of rope cycles;
  • the first sign of a technique or standard breakdown.

Avoid plans such as “switch when it feels right.” Two fatigued athletes can interpret that differently. Also avoid heroic opening sets that create an emergency switch. A slightly conservative first rotation gives the pair information.

The current official rules govern where and how a changeover is legal.1 Rehearse with those rules rather than inventing a hand-tag ritual from an old video.

Allocate by cost, not symmetry

A 50/50 split is easy to remember but may be expensive. Use three questions:

  1. Who can perform this movement to standard most reliably?
  2. What is the cost to that athlete's next run?
  3. Does the planned set length give the resting athlete enough time to recover?

The stronger athlete may take more total work, but “more” does not mean one maximal block. Several controlled blocks can preserve both movement standard and running. The weaker athlete should still own predictable work where they can contribute cleanly.

Protect the running partnership

Before the race, agree on:

  • who sets the opening pace;
  • one cue that means “ease slightly”;
  • one cue that means “I am stable again”;
  • how you handle narrow sections without pulling apart;
  • where you will stop discussing station strategy.

The faster runner's job is not to run at their solo pace and look back. The pair should arrive at each station composed enough to find the entry, hear officials, and start the planned rotation.

A three-rehearsal sequence

Rehearsal 1: standards and clean switches

Use low fatigue. Confirm movement standards, work-zone behavior, entry and exit, and the exact verbal cues. Stop sets before technique degrades.

Rehearsal 2: station pairs

Combine two stations with controlled running between them. Measure whether the planned set sizes remain clean and whether the pair can resume a shared running effort.

Rehearsal 3: reduced simulation

Use a deliberately reduced total volume. Practise the opening restraint, several station allocations, and the final wall-ball communication. A full race-effort simulation is not required to learn the transitions and can create recovery cost without solving a new decision.

Space demanding hybrid work around strength and running quality. Evidence on concurrent-training order does not identify one perfect sequence for everyone, but it supports paying attention to the acute fatigue created by session order.3

Write a one-card race plan

For each station, record only:

  • first worker;
  • first set;
  • normal switch cue;
  • backup switch cue;
  • one standard reminder.

Example: “A starts. 20 clean wall balls. Switch at 20 or at first doubtful depth. B starts with 15. Say the count before moving.” The exact numbers must come from the pair's practice; they are not a universal prescription.

Add event logistics from the current athlete guide: wave time, check-in, equipment rules, and any venue-specific instructions. Official rulebooks and briefings remain authoritative.1

Common strategy failures

Assigning stations from fresh personal bests

Fresh output can hide the cost to later running. Use repeatable work after running.

Changing the plan after one bad repetition

Use the backup cue, not a new debate. A short reset can be faster than an emotional switch.

Waiting for failure

Failure often creates slower movement, no-rep risk, and a longer recovery. Switch at the planned quality boundary.

Overcoaching each other

Agree on short cues. A partner under load rarely needs a technical lecture.

Copying an elite pair

Their capacities, category, movement efficiency, and risk tolerance may not match yours. Use official standards and your own evidence.

Safety and readiness

Pain that changes movement, acute illness, chest symptoms, fainting, confusion, or severe breathing difficulty is not a strategy problem. Stop and seek appropriate assistance. Do not use a partner's encouragement to override a medical or safety signal.

Recovery also affects the pair. Sleep deprivation can impair endurance performance, and no recovery method reliably erases a poorly timed maximal simulation.6 Keep the last rehearsals familiar and arrive with decisions already made.
